Set dramatically into the steep cliffs of the Altındere Valley in Trabzon, Sümela Monastery is one of the most distinctive architectural landmarks of the Black Sea region. Its remarkable relationship with the surrounding rock formations, forested mountains and dramatic topography has shaped a cultural landscape unlike almost any other in Anatolia.
